STEP INTO SUMMER 2017 -- WALKING COMPETITION 
Are you a resident or employee of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill, or Wethersfield?  If so, the Central Connecticut Health District (CCHD) invites you to join us as we get healthier and have a little friendly neighborhood competition.  In partnership with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, we are hosting our second annual Step into Summer 2017 Walking Competition!

And the winner is.....Berlin and Wethersfield!   

Congratulations to all those who helped Berlin bring home the High Stepper Trophy!  Berlin participants averaged 143.5 miles during the 6-week competition.

Debbie Dennis of Berlin Parks and Recreation Department accepts the High Stepper trophy from Charles Brown, Director of Health.  

Wethersfield earned the first-ever Impact Award!  This award honors the town with most participants in the competition and therefore creating the highest impact on the communitie's overall fitness. With 86 participants, Wethersfield contributed 10,975.5 miles to the total 31,868.3 miles walked by all competition participants.  That is over 1/3 of the total!  GREAT going Wethersfield!

Please join us to find out the winners (town and individual) on Thursday, June 29 at the Veteran's Memorial Amphitheater in Rocky Hill's beautiful Elm Ridge Park during the first of their free summer concert series. Awards will be announced between sets.  Please note: The results on the website do not necessarily reflect the actual final numbers, due to some data corrections.

Week 1:  Berlin jumps into an easy lead!  What will happen in Week 2???  Stay Tuned.

Week 2:  Berlin is still in the lead...but wait, what?  CCHD pulls into second. We can't even win the trophy so who will challenge Berlin?  Keep up those steps coming!  

Week 3:  Oh my. The gap widens. Who is going to get outside this weekend and challenge the Berliners?   We are only half-way through, so let's Step it UP!

Week 4: This is the last week of reporting out before the Award Ceremony on June 29 at the Summer Concert Series at Veterans Memorial Amphitheater at Elm Ridge Park in Rocky Hill.  (Thank you to RH Parks and Rec for hosting us).  The concerts are free - from 6:30-8:30.  Food is available for purchase or you can bring a picnic. There is still time to get out and increase those steps!  Challenge yourself to a 10% increase, and ask a friend or family member join you!  We hope to see you on the 29th.  Rain Date is Tuesday, July 5.

The Basics:

  1. The fun begins on April 30, 2017 and will conclude on June 10, 2017.
  2. Information Sessions will be held in each Town.  A limited number of free pedometers will be available at each session.  See below for dates and times.  You may attend any session.

                 Tuesday, April 4, 2017 6:00 pm - Wethersfield, Pitkin Community Center, Fireside Room

                 Wednesday, April 5, 2017 6:00 pm - Berlin, McGee Midle School, Berlin

                 Tuesday, April 18, 2017  6:00 pm - Newington, Lucy Robbins Welles Library

  1. Registration begins on April 17, 2017 and will be available on Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Walking Works website (www.walkingworks.com), or through the “WalkingWorks” mobile app, to take part in the competition. Click here for Walking Works Registration Instructions
  2. All participants will wear a pedometer or utilize the tracking device of choice during the 6-week program to count daily steps.  Steps count toward the town where you work or live. 
  3. This competition is open to all ages – children and families are encouraged to participate!

How It Works:

  1. Each participant must register at walkingworks.com or on the Walking Works mobile app.   If you are not registered, your steps will not count
  2. Registered participants should sign-up to be on their town’s team.  Participants can organize teams with family, friends or coworkers, but steps will be tracked by town only.   
  3. Each town has a contact person for the competition. If you have questions, please contact the person listed for your town:

  1. You may be contacted via email by your town contact person or by Central Connecticut Health District staff about the competition. Your email or personal information will not be shared outside the purposes of the walking competition.

What You Need to Know:

  1. Steps must be entered weekly into the tracking program by Sunday of each week (May 7, May 14, May 21, May 28, June 4 and June 11) to count toward the competition.  Click here for Walking Works Registration Instructions

  3. Updates will be provided weekly noon on Fridays (May 5, May 12, May 19, May 26, June 2 & June 9), giving the other towns a chance to Step-It Up the following week.
  4. Winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 29, 2017 (rain date, Wednesday, July 5, 2017) at the “Summer Concert Series” at the Rocky Hill Elm Ridge Park Amphitheatre. 
  5. Honorable mention will be given for the town with the highest total miles logged, and the town with greatest number of participants.
  6. Prizes will be awarded to the individual with highest number of steps/miles in each town and the individual with highest number of steps overall.
  7.  The TOWN with the highest average steps per participant will be declared the winner of the competition and gain bragging rights with the 2017 Highest Stepper Trophy, currently held by Berlin!
